Victoria – Yambuk Lake & Beach
Welcome to Yambuk, a windswept, salt-streaked gem tucked west of Port Fairy where rugged dunes meet a tidal lagoon. Yambuk Lake, when open to the ocean, becomes a dream for flatwater cruising—its shallow basin forming a buttery lagoon behind the sandbar. Downwind, the endless stretch of ocean beach catches southern swell and carves lines through wide-open water. The vibe here is peaceful, remote, and raw—just a few campers, anglers, and the occasional local vanlifer pulled up near the dunes.
The ocean beach works best in SE to NE seabreezes, offering long, uncrowded downwinders and choppy bump-and-jump playgrounds. The lake, when it's flowing and deep enough, delivers a completely different session—glassy, side-on runs, protected from swell and ideal for early foiling or relaxed cruising. Be aware the lake mouth isn’t always open; recent rain or council dredging dictates the flow.
Access is simple via Yambuk Lake Road with grassed rigging areas near the boat ramp and duneside car park. The flat sand and space allow for easy launching, and the wind often funnels cleanly down the lake corridor. If you’re staying nearby, this one’s worth scoping daily—it changes with tide, wind, and water level.
There’s a low-key magic to Yambuk—part river mouth, part freshwater lagoon, part open coast. When it’s on, you’ll wonder how more kiters haven’t found it. When it’s not, just grab a line and join the locals fishing at the mouth.
